First results from a pilot survey of recreational fishing in France ArchiMer
Herfaut, Johanna; Levrel, Harold; Thebaud, Olivier; Tranger, Hervé; Berthou, Patrick; Dintheer, Christian; Guyader, Olivier; Morizur, Yvon.
Between 2006 and 2008, Ifremer, in collaboration with the polling institute BVA, implemented a pilot survey of french recreational fisheries. The aim of the survey was to assess the overall population involved in this activity, taking into account the diversity of recreational fishing practices, from fish and shellfish gathering on the seashore to angling and spearfishing. The study was designed to provide first estimates of fishing effort, catches and landings, and economic impacts of recreational fishing. The protocol implemented was two-step. First, a telephone survey of french households, based on a sampling frame of the entire french population of people aged 15+, was carried out to assess the population of fishers and give a first general view of the...

Morizur, Yvon; Charuau, Anatole.
Some trawlers from Lorient (France) are fishing for Nephrops at the North of 48th parallel. During the last years, the mesh size of their cod-end changed twice. It increased from 45 mm to 60 mm at the end of year 1978 and to 70 mm at the end of year 1979.'. Whereas the change to 60 mm seems to have no immediate- effect on Nephrops landings, the increase from 60 mm to 70 mm results in a loss in Nephrops landings of 30-40 %. That loss in Nephrops landings goes with an increase in some by-catches species as whiting, cod and hake.

Morizur, Yvon; Gaudou, Olivier; Miossec, Dominique; Leblond, Emilie; Toulhoat, Lucile; Gamblin, Caroline.
Up to now there has been no strong investigation on bycatch of marine mammals in the French set net fisheries of the English Channel (ICES areas VIIe,d &IVc) as the EC 812/2004 regulation does not oblige the state members to put observers on board of vessels in the ICES area VII. A study named FilManCet has been started end 2008-beginning 2009 to focus on the bycatch occurring on the set net vessels issued from Boulogne and Dunkerque ports (fisheries in VIId&IVc) and from the ports of North of Brittany. In this study which is conducted by the Fishing Industry, the data are made available to the scientists of Ifremer who has prepared also the sampling scheme for observation at sea. Two observers are employed full time in the North of France coasts...

At present, the majority of fisheries are monitored and regulated in areas which are delineated by arbitrary ICES boundaries which do not necessarily have logical or consistent relationships with biological processes or fish movements. The biogeographical identification of Channel stocks is, therefore, an important step towards developing a rational strategy for the management of their fisheries. This synthesis is based on the wide available knowledge which has not been yet entirely exploited with the purpose of stock identification, for 25 commercially important species in the Channel. In addition, principal technics for stock identification are reviewed likewise environmental characteristics of the Channel, which represent fundamental components in...

Charuau, Anatole; Morizur, Yvon; Rivoalen, Jean-jacques.
Since 1978, the habits of the french fishermen working with bottom trawl in the Irish Sea and in the Celtic Sea were altered (CHARUAU et M0RIZUR, 198l) under the pressure of the new mesh regulation. Two facts are pointed out: - the shifting, stabilized during 1980 and 198l, of a part of the effort of the vessels fishing for gadoids, from the area VIIa to the areaVIIf - a tendancy inside the area VIIg of a part of the effort of the Nephrops trawlers to be transferred on benthic fishes when the yield of Nephrops is low.

Morizur, Yvon; Carn, Nolwenn.

Morizur, Yvon.
Total mortalities were determined in several Nephrops stocks according to two methods using length distributions with growth parameters : Beverton and holt's Method, end Ssentongo and Larkin's method. We applied these two formulae in conditions which differ from those in which they were established. Therefore validity of methods was certified by simulated length distributions. Apparent- natural mortality values of 0.2-0.3 were obtained from, length distributions of quasi-inexploited stocks. Real mortality differs from apparent mortality in effects of behaviour. Kodels used in Nephrops assessments are discussed.

The scientific cruise Observhal96 took place in August 4-27, 1996 with the underwater system for exploration and intervention « Cyana » and the support vessel « Suroît ». The goal of this IFREMER first use of a man opereted submersible for a fisheries study was to observe fishes and invertebrates in their environment, as well as fishing gears in operation. All the dives, 2 to 5 hours long, took place off Brittany in Atlantic. Five were shalower than 100 meters, nine between 100 and 200 meters, one at 400 meters and for deeper than 1000 meters. Six dives have been dedicated to in situ study of the impact of fishing gears : observation of the geometry of a monkfish tramel net and analysis of losses during hauling ; tracks of a bottom trawl and relative...

Morizur, Yvon.
Ovary development and the presence of spermatophore in females of Nephrops norvegicus (L.) (Nephropidae) from South Brittany were studied from July 1976 to October 1978 through size classes. Percentage of females bearing spermatophores increased slowly up to 1978 during which year a sudden and important decrease was observed. The percentage decreased to the lowest value obtained in 1976. A study of ovarian development showed that the proportion of small females taking part in reproduction was greater in 1978 than in 1977. The beginning of the decrease in the percentage of spermatophores present coincided with the beginning of spawning in each size class. It may be explained by the behaviour of ovigerous females which stay in burrows during the incubation...

By-catch and Discarding in Pelagic Trawl Fisheries ArchiMer
Morizur, Yvon; Tregenza, N; Heessen, H; Beerow, S; Pouvreau, Stephane.
Incidental mammal catch and the composition of the fish catch were studied in pelagic trawl fisheries in the North-East Atlantic. Several seasonal European fisheries were investigated with scientific observation on the fishing vessels. A total of 379 days at sea were observed . The sampled fisheries were horsemackerel (Dutch, French), herring (Irish), mackerel (UK), pilchard (UK , French) and other French fisheries (hake, tuna, bass, black bream, anchovy). Unintentional catches of dolphins were recorded in four of the investigated fisheries (Dutch horsemackerel, French tuna, French hake and French sea bass) at a rate of 1 dolphin per 100 tow hours; Grey seals were caught in the Irish herring fishery at a rate of 4 individuals per 100 tow hours. The fish...

Introduction : Since 1978, new measures to better manage lobster fisheries were implemented in the Celtic Sea within the context of Community regulations. Meshing, in particular, was set at 60mm, but many owners, in order to maintain sufficient leeway vis-à-vis the regulations and to avoid administrative hassles adopted at the outset fish meshing at 70mm, even 80mm. Certain habits aiming to compensate for the losses due to these increases were established: Adoption of better-performing trawls, increase in the secondary catch and enlargement of the fisheries. At the same time, especially because of strong demand from international bodies, OEM and especially EEC, knowledge about the lobster spread and more reliable assessments were achieved, the main problem...

Morizur, Yvon; Pouvreau, Stephane; Guenole, Annie.
Observers were set on board of fishing vessels from North Brittanny ports during one full year (1992-93). This study granted by EC Commission (contract CE/DGXIV-C-1 n° 1992/06) was a first approach for assessing French discards in the western English Channel. It identifies the main species discarded and produces a rough estimate of discard rates and size compositions in each métier targeting fish. The major reasons for variability were explained. Size compositions of catches and discards were provided in order to permit better estimates of the mortality induced by fishing operations. The fixed nets observed were large mesh nets (270 to 360 mm) targeting monkfish and small mesh nets (<200 mm) targeting coastal resources. Netting was found to be more...

Simulating bio-economic management scenarios for the sea bass (Dicentrachus labrax) fishery in France ArchiMer
Drouot, Bruno; Thebaud, Olivier; Ramat, Eric; Morizur, Yvon; Boude, Jean-pierre.
The fishery for common sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is the fourth most important French metropolitan fishery in value terms, with approximately 5 500 tons landed, and a total turnover of about 52 million euro in 2006. Given its high market value, sea bass is targeted by a range of métiers, resulting in interactions between a large number of fleets. The annual contributions to catches and landings of each of these fleets are highly variable, as are their level of economic dependence towards the species. Sea bass is also an emblematic species for recreational fishermen. Currently, there is no limitation on total allowable catch in this fishery, nor are catch allocations specified at the individual vessel level. The fishery thus faces the traditional...

Assessment of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax, L.) stock delimitation in the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel based on mark-recapture and genetic data ArchiMer
Fritsch, Manon; Morizur, Yvon; Lambert, E; Bonhomme, Francois; Guinand, B.
Sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fisheries are becoming increasingly abundant along eastern Atlantic coastlines, especially in the ICES sub-areas IV, VII and VIII, but they are still not being managed by the European Union TAC (Total Allowed Catches) system. Scientific information about these sea bass stocks is limited, but the fishery is currently managed or modelled based upon these data, separated into the ICES divisions. Clearly, failure to manage satisfactorily the fishery may lead to a decline in stocks. We therefore investigated the structure of Atlantic sea bass populations at eight microsatellite loci in the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel and, additionally, at five selected loci in Ireland and Scotland. Genetic data showed no significant...

Latrouite, Daniel; Morizur, Yvon.
French potters from « Manche ouest » harbours ish edible crab Cancer pagurus in English Channel, Iroise Sea and along north Biscay Bay shelf. Monthly landings of the offshore fleet analysed from logbooks for the period 1985-1987 indicate changes in fishing areas. The mean length of males, the mean length of females and the sex-ratio have been analysed by Principal Component Analysis in 1981-1987 samples. The heterogeneity between catches from different statistical rectangle (30 x 40 nautical miles) was great enough to deduce a way of raising composition from samples to total landings. It also offers the possibility to verifiy and correct declaration on geographical origin of landings.

Morizur, Yvon; Le Niliot, Ph; Buanic, M; Pianalto, S.
A pinger experiment was carried out on the French trammel net fishery in the marine protected area off the west coasts of Britanny in order to compare acoustic mitigation measures for harbour porpoise. Three types of pinger devices (Aquamark 100, Pinger V02, DDD02) were used for porpoise mitigation in the area where no bycatch estimation has previously been made. The pingers DDD02 were attached at each end of the net near the anchor. The pinger Aquamark and pinger V02 were attached to the headline of the nets and were spaced by 400 m and 200 m respectively. The EC regulation 812/2004 requires a such pilot study. Observers at sea were deployed on board of 10 fishing vessels from Le Conquet and Audierne harbours. The problem of discards in fisheries ArchiMer
Morizur, Yvon; Caillart, B; Tingley, D.
Introduction : It is now clear that the world's fishery resources are being subjected to exploitation at or above their capacity to produce maximum sustainable yields. At the same time as these trends are being felt, there is a very large wastage of fishery resources from discarding unwanted catches at sea. At the end of each fishing operation a part of the catch is often returned to the sea after sorting by the fishermen. A 1994 FAO report provided an estimate of global discards in commercial fisheries of 27 millions of tons per year compared to 50 million tons of direct human consumption. A more recent FAO document estimated that discards were in the order of 20 million tons in 1997. The majority of the world's fisheries are multi-species in nature and...
